About Us

Putnam CARES was established in direct response to the 2023 Community Needs Assessment, which revealed that 50% of residents believe addiction and illegal drug use are major issues, and 37% reported inadequate access to mental health treatment and resources. In partnership with CivicLab, a foundation was developed for a collaborative focused on addressing these concerns. As that partnership concluded, Putnam CARES emerged as a community-driven initiative dedicated to supporting individuals impacted by mental health and substance use challenges in Putnam County. Today, nearly 40 community members with backgrounds in these areas are actively involved in advancing this important work.

Our Mission

Our mission is to build a healthier, more resilient community by promoting mental wellness, preventing substance use, and expanding access to compassionate, evidence-based care. We are committed to collaboration, education, and advocacy that addresses the unique challenges faced by individuals and families in our county. Together, we strive to reduce stigma, strengthen support systems, and ensure every resident has the opportunity to thrive.

“The Community Needs Assessment told us what many already knew—mental health and substance use are real struggles here. With Putnam CARES, we’re ready to roll up our sleeves and work together to build the support systems our community deserves.”

Why
Putnam CARES Matters

Putnam County, like many rural communities, faces a unique set of challenges when it comes to mental health, substance use, and access to care. The 2023 Community Needs Assessment revealed that half of residents believe addiction and drug use are major concerns, while over a third noted a lack of available mental health services. These issues don’t just impact individuals—they ripple through families, workplaces, schools, and entire neighborhoods. Putnam CARES was created in direct response to these community-identified needs, working to close the gaps and strengthen systems of support that empower every resident to live a healthier, more connected life.

This initiative isn’t just about programs—it’s about people. By bringing together local organizations, providers, and community members, Putnam CARES uses a collaborative, data-informed approach to drive real change. The work we’re doing helps reduce stigma, increase access to services, and ensure that everyone—regardless of age, income, or background—has the opportunity to thrive. Together, we are building a stronger, more resilient Putnam County, one that listens to its people and responds with purpose.
